Flooding Assistance and Mitigation Program

The Sussex County Community Development & Housing office, in partnership with the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) and the Delaware Emergency Management Agency (DEMA), have developed a flooding assistance and mitigation program for qualified property owners who have suffered ongoing damage as a result of floods.

This assistance program (when funded) would make available to qualified property owners a 50-percent matching federal grant to mitigate future flooding problems. The funds would be sought through FEMA. Note: This matching amount is different from the FEMA guidelines that have a 25-percent homeowner match. In addition, a fee for project and grant management will be included in the project’s total costs.

To qualify, property owners MUST HAVE federal flood insurance (National Flood Insurance Program) AND be able to document history of damage caused by flooding. Property owners also would need to supply documentation illustrating previous repair costs, and be willing to pay half the cost of any flooding mitigation project.

Interested property owners are encouraged to download and fill out an application form to be considered. The form is provided here.
