Georgetown, Del., Dec. 5, 2012: Installation of two temporary pipes to connect the Nanticoke River to a dredge disposal site west of Seaford will begin next week, and will affect motorists traveling to and from the community of Woodland through the end of December.

Crews from Zack Excavating of Smyrna, Del., are scheduled to begin work Monday, Dec. 10, on a project to install two steel casing pipes beneath Woodland Road. The 30-inch parallel casings are necessary to hold smaller pipes, which will be used to shuttle dredge spoils from the river and return water back to the Nanticoke .The pipe installation is part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ $1.8 million dredging project, slated to begin later this winter.

Single-lane closures of Woodland Road will occur as part of the pipe installation. Flaggers will be stationed along Woodland Road to assist travelers in this area. Work is scheduled to occur Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to midnight each day. Because crews are working with a short-window schedule, it is necessary for construction to occur beyond normal business hours. No work will occur on weekends.

Crews are under contract to complete the installation by Dec. 30, but could finish work ahead of the Christmas holiday. The $49,500 pipe installation project is funded by Sussex County government, which is the local sponsor for the federal program to dredge the river.
