Sussex County Government Operations Reopening

Sussex County government facilities are returning to near-normal operations, effective June 2021. Restrictions on public access to most County offices are no longer in effect, unless otherwise noted below (see table).

Visitors to County facilities are not required to wear a mask indoors if a minimum of three (3) feet of social distancing can be maintained. If three (3) feet of distance cannot be maintained, then a visitor is required to wear a mask indoors.

Visitors may be required to undergo a health screening upon entering a County facility. Individuals who exhibit symptoms of illness, including fever, will not be permitted entry.

The public is encouraged to monitor this page regularly to review any changes to County operations. If visitors have any additional questions about a specific office/department's current status, please contact the respective office in advance for further guidance.

Assessment

  • Walk-in service available 8:30AM - 4:30PM for Tax Releases, Mobile Home Class C letters and Assessment inquiries. Visitors must check in with security in the County Administrative Offices lobby before proceeding to the Assessment office. Call (302) 855-7824 for more information.

Building Permits

  • Walk-in service available 8:30AM - 3:00PM for customers applying for building permits. After 3:00PM, by appointment only. Visitors must check in with security in the County Administrative Offices lobby before proceeding to the Permits office. Call (302) 855-7720 for more information.

Community Development & Housing

  • Open, but appointments preferred; call (302) 855-7777 in advance to schedule an appointment. All customers visiting the office, with or without appointments, will be required to check in with the West Complex receptionist;
  • Effective immediately, monthly pre-bid meetings have returned to their previous location inside the West Complex conference room;
  • Contractors bidding on jobs and performing interior work for clients in homes will be required to wear masks when social distancing is not possible.

Constable

  • By appointment only; call (302) 855-7819 to schedule an appointment. Visitors must check in with security in the County Administrative Offices lobby before proceeding to the Constable’s office.

Marriage Bureau

  • By appointment only; license application and ceremonies scheduled every half hour during regular business hours. Certified copy requests also by appointment only when applicants are unable to conduct business by mail/email. Visitors must check in with security in the County Administrative Offices lobby before proceeding to the Marriage Bureau;
  • Couples may bring two witnesses to a ceremony in the Marriage Bureau, if requested in advance.

Planning & Zoning

  • By appointment only; call (302) 855-7878 to schedule an appointment. Visitors must check in with security in the County Administrative Offices lobby before proceeding to the Planning & Zoning office.

Recorder of Deeds

  • Accepting most customers by appointment only, with exceptions. Customers recording plot plans, dropping off documents for recording, or paying realty transfer construction payments do not need an appointment. Call (302) 855-7785 or email deeds@sussexcountyde.gov to schedule an appointment;
  • Appointments for recording services and general information scheduled in one-hour blocks;
  • Title searches must make a reservation to access the Recorder of Deeds office;
  • Requests for copies of documents can be made anytime to Recorder of Deeds staff by emailing deeds@sussexcountyde.gov.
