Georgetown, Del., Jan 7, 2025: Sussex County government has a fresh new look with a changing of the guard for the new year.
November election winners took office on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2025, during a swearing-in ceremony held in County Council chambers on The Circle in Georgetown. Matt Lloyd of Laurel was sworn in as the new District 1 Council member, replacing four-term member and longtime Council President Michael H. Vincent; Steve C. McCarron of Bridgeville was sworn in as the new District 2 member, replacing Cynthia C. Green; and Jane Gruenebaum of Rehoboth Beach was sworn in to take over the District 3 seat held by Mark G. Schaeffer. Clerk of the Peace Norman A. ‘Jay’ Jones also took his oath of office, with each official beginning four-year terms.
Following the swearing-in ceremony, County Council selected officers for 2025, naming Councilman Douglas B. Hudson of the Dagsboro area to serve as president, a first for him in his six years on Council, while choosing Councilman John L. Rieley of Millsboro as vice president.
It is customary for council at the first meeting of each year to elect officers and appoint legal staff. As Council president, Mr. Hudson will preside over all council meetings in 2025, with Mr. Rieley substituting as the presiding officer anytime Mr. Hudson is unable to attend.
Council also approved J. Everett Moore Jr. to re-appointment as County Attorney. Mr. Moore serves at the pleasure of the County Council as the elected body’s chief counsel. Meantime, staff from the Moore & Rutt and Parkowski, Guerke & Swayze law firms will represent the Board of Adjustment and Planning & Zoning Commission respectively as assistant county attorneys.
