Georgetown, Del., July 28, 2026: Sussex County has scored a hat trick of its own in the field of finances.

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada, based in Chicago, last month awarded Sussex County its prestigious Triple Crown Award, which recognizes governments that have received GFOA's Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting, Popular Annual Financial Reporting Award, and the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the previous year. The County won each of those awards in the last year, thereby guaranteeing it Triple Crown status.

The distinction is the third-in-a-row Triple Crown Award win for Sussex County, and the latest in a string of financial accolades bestowed upon the County – including an upgrade to the highest Aaa bond rating – during the past 20-plus years.

Scoring the latest financial trifecta once again puts Sussex County in an elite class, as one of only 441 local governments nationwide and the only one in Delaware to have earned the Triple Crown Award this year, according to GFOA.

“We are proud to again receive the GFOA’s distinguished Triple Crown Award,” County Finance Director Gina A. Jennings said. “This is an honor that many strive for, but few receive. Winning awards, though, is not our end goal. It’s just the end result, thanks to a dedicated team and a long-held philosophy to safeguard the County taxpayers’ dollars and maintain the public trust.”
