Jane Grunebaum

Jane Gruenebaum serves as the 3rd district councilwoman on Sussex County Council, representing Delaware Bay and Atlantic coast communities, including the Broadkill Beach, Dewey Beach, Henlopen Acres, Lewes, Long Neck, Primehook Beach, Rehoboth Beach, and Slaughter Beach areas. Elected to County Council in 2024, Ms. Gruenebaum moved from Washington, D.C., to Sussex County part-time in 2010, then full-time in 2017, and since then has been active in her adopted community. She was the founding president of the Sussex Preservation Coalition, dedicated to balancing the economic growth of Sussex County with the need to preserve the natural environment that protects and nurtures its residents. A graduate of Columbia University in New York City, with a Ph.D. in political science, Ms. Gruenebaum’s professional background includes university teaching, serving as a senior staffer at the Brookings Institution, and leadership of non-profit organizations, including the National League of Women Voters and the Center for Policy Alternatives. Ms. Gruenebaum has been an active volunteer in several local organizations here in Sussex County, including the Humane Animal Partners and the Cinema Art Theater in the Lewes area. She and her spouse, Leslie Calman, are the proud parents of one son and are delighted with the recent birth of their first grandchild.
