Sussex County EMS evaluates 31 patients from possible chemical exposure.

February 08, 2008 MR 08-05 [Selbyville-DE] – Selbyville Fire Department and Sussex County EMS (SCEMS) Paramedics and Hazardous Medical Response Team (Haz-Med) evaluated 31people following a reported chemical release at the Mountaire Poultry Plant on Hoosier Street in Selbyville Delaware. On Tuesday February 07, 2008 at 9:19pm units were dispatched to the plant for a reported release of Anhydrous Ammonia with workers complaining of illness. Ambulances and support units were requested from seven additional fire departments in Delaware and Maryland. Responding additional companies included Roxanna, Frankford, Dagsboro, Gumboro, Bishopville, Millsboro and Millville.

Workers where triaged, treated and housed in temporary shelters to protect them from the elements. 17 total patients where transported to three Delaware and two Maryland hospitals with non-life threatening complaints. The remainder where evaluated or treated on scene and did not require transport. Firefighters that made entry to the plant where also evaluated for illness and contamination. None of those required any treatment or decontamination.
