Tidal flooding forces closure of Del. Route 1 near Indian River Inlet

1630 Hours, Monday, May 12, 2008, GEORGETOWN, DE – As expected due to tidal flooding, the Delaware State Police and Department of Transportation this afternoon have closed Del. Route 1 between Dewey Beach and Fred Hudson Road/Road 360.

Crews have posted variable message boards and detour signs in the vicinity to alert motorists of the closure. Motorists traveling south on Del. Route 1 are advised to take Del. Route 24 to U.S. Route 113 to Del. Route 26. Northbound motorists on Del. Route 1 should take Del. Routes 26 or 54 west to U.S. Route 113 north.

It is important to note that the closure is due to flooding of both the northbound and southbound lanes of Del. Route 1. These lanes should reopen as tidal floodwaters from today’s nor’easter recede later this evening.

The National Weather Service in Mt. Holly, N.J. continues a coastal flood warning for Sussex County through 8 a.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2008.

Officials with the Delaware State Police, Delaware Department of Transportation and Sussex County Emergency Operations Center continue to monitor the storm, and encourage the public to use caution if traveling on area roadways during the next 12 to 24 hours.
