Residents, property owners of Golf Village approve new sewer district

Georgetown, Del., May 1, 2008: Residents and property owners of the Golf Village community near Georgetown have said ‘yes’ to central sewer service.

In a referendum held Thursday, May 1, 2008, voters overwhelmingly favored creation of a County operated sewer system that will provide public wastewater to the neighborhood.

Acting on petitions received from property owners, the Sussex County Engineering Department has proposed the creation of the Golf Village Sanitary Sewer District. Currently, properties are served by private septic systems, which pose a greater environmental risk.

Results of the vote were 67 in favor of the district, with 3 voting against. The district’s creation awaits final approval of the Sussex County Council.

The County Engineering Department will begin designing the estimated $1.6 million system to serve the new district and its approximately 54 properties, said John J. Ashman, director of Utility Planning. Construction should begin in January 2009, and finish by summer.

A copy of the proposed district map, as well as a newsletter explaining estimated rates, can be obtained online at sussexcountyde.gov/proposed-projects-schedules, or by calling (302) 855-1299.
