County to host building code training

Georgetown, Del., June 11, 2008: Sussex County government will host a weeklong training session this summer for building inspectors and others in the construction field who want to learn more about building code standards.

The five-day session begins Monday, July 7, and will focus on the 2003 International Residential Code, which Sussex County uses as its building code for residential properties. Classes will focus on code standards and plan review, as well as inspection techniques.

Van Milligan, chief Building Code inspector, said the training is an opportunity for his staff, especially new inspectors, to learn the International Residential Code. It also will give builders, municipal inspectors and others involved in construction a chance to brush up on the code.

The training comes as Sussex County inspectors prepare to assume single-family home inspections this fall. Since 1993, Sussex County has contracted with an outside firm to conduct inspections of single-family housing, while County inspectors conducted multi-family and commercial inspections. The County Council late last year approved a change in policy that will make County inspectors responsible for all inspections beginning Sept. 1.

Training will be held Monday, July 7, through Friday, July 11, at the Georgetown Fire Company on South Bedford Street. The cost is $250 per person, not including the cost of textbooks. Lunch will be provided. Registration is required and seating is limited. For more information and to register, call (302) 855-7860.
