South Coastal Library will close temporarily for move back to newly expanded building

Georgetown, Del., Jan. 21, 2009: The South Coastal Library is on the move again.

After 14 months in temporary quarters in Millville, the South Coastal Library will close for approximately two months, beginning Monday, Feb. 2, 2009. The closure will allow staff to begin the task of moving books, shelves and other materials back to a newly expanded facility on Kent Avenue in Bethany Beach.

The library has been located inside the Creekside Plaza in Millville since November 2007, to make way for a nearly $6 million expansion project. Construction began in January 2008, and will wrap up in the coming weeks, with an expected re-opening this spring.

The multi-million-dollar expansion has added about 10,000 square feet to the 13-year-old facility – effectively doubling its size. The additional space will give the library more room for its growing collection and add much-needed space for meetings and cultural events.

The expansion also will allow library staff to add computers and improve other amenities at the facility. Funding for the overall design and construction totals approximately $6 million, with $3 million of the funding coming from the State, $1.5 million from Sussex County government and up to $2 million from the Friends of the South Coastal Library group.
