Sussex County to hold public meeting on design options for park near Seaford

Georgetown, Del., Feb. 7, 2013: Sussex County will hold a meeting to get public feedback on the proposed Woodland Park west of Seaford, which, once developed, would become a publicly accessible recreation area with trails and open space.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at the Nanticoke Senior Center, 1001 W. Locust St., in Seaford. Representatives from County government as well as Pennoni Associates Inc. will present a number of options for the park’s design. The public is encouraged to attend the meeting to provide input on the final design.

The park is planned for a portion of the former Woodland Golf Course, which the County purchased in May 2010 in preparation for the Nanticoke River dredging project. That years-long effort led by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is now underway, with crews at work this month to deepen the main channel from nine to 12 feet.

Only the back half of the 41-acre site off Woodland Road is needed to deposit material dredged from the river. The remaining 20 acres, at the front of the parcel, is what will become the park. Preliminary designs, based on public input received last summer, call for a low-impact park that would feature a natural wildlife setting and trails ideal for biking and walking.
