Sussex County officials selected for state, national leadership posts

Georgetown, Del., Jan. 21, 2011: Two members of Sussex County Council will be representing Delaware’s three counties on the state and national levels in the year ahead.

Councilman George B. Cole of Ocean View and Councilman Vance Phillips of Laurel have been appointed by the Delaware Association of Counties to key leadership positions for the organization in 2011. Mr. Cole will serve as one of two Delaware representatives on the National Association of Counties’ board of directors for the next two years, while Mr. Phillips will serve as the Delaware association’s president for this year. Members of the Delaware Association of Counties made their selections at the annual meeting on Jan. 20 in Dover.

“It is an honor to serve all three counties and I look forward to helping promote local government during these difficult times,” Mr. Phillips said.

Both positions are unpaid, but are no less significant as each will be an advocate for the interests of Delaware’s three counties in both the General Assembly and Congress. Like its national counterpart, the Delaware Association of Counties is an organization that allows County leaders to network and share ideas, and be a voice for County governments on issues, especially State and federal legislation, that filter down to the local level.

“I am honored once again to serve my colleagues and Delaware’s counties on this prestigious national board,” Mr. Cole said. “It’s a great opportunity to learn about what issues other counties are facing, and how we might learn from them to solve the challenges back at home.”
