Sussex County recognizes various agencies, businesses for their efforts during blizzards

Georgetown, Del., March 23, 2010: The snow that smothered Sussex County this winter has long since melted. But Sussex County’s appreciation for the efforts of countless first responders, road crews, utility workers and others will endure for seasons to come.

County Council, at its Tuesday, March 23, 2010, meeting, recognized more than a dozen local and state agencies, utility companies and other organizations for their collective response to rare back-to-back blizzards that hit the area in February. Each organization was presented with a plaque thanking them for their service during the Feb. 5-6 and Feb. 9-10 blizzards.

“We appreciate all the work by these agencies and applaud their spirit of cooperation,” County Administrator David Baker said. “These groups and their dedicated staffs restored power to areas with widespread outages, relayed critical information, and rescued motorists stranded on impassable roads. Given the conditions, these were heroic efforts.”

Honored were the American Red Cross of the Delmarva Peninsula, Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, Delaware Department of Safety and Homeland Security, Delaware Department of Transportation, Delaware Electric Cooperative, Delaware Emergency Management Agency, Delaware National Guard, Delaware State Police, Delmarva Power, Sussex Amateur Radio Emergency Service, Sussex County Emergency Medical Services, Sussex County Emergency Operations Center, Sussex County Farm Bureau, Sussex County Fire Chiefs Association, Sussex County Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service, Sussex County Volunteer Ambulance Association and the Sussex County Volunteer Firefighters Association.
