Sussex County row officers take office; Council elects leadership, appoints legal staff

Georgetown, Del., Jan. 4, 2011: The New Year is bringing with it a few new faces and a change in leadership for Sussex County government.

County Council, at its Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011, meeting, elected its officers for 2011, selecting as president Councilman Michael H. Vincent of Seaford, and as vice president Councilman Samuel R. Wilson Jr. Prior to their selection as Council leadership, returning Council members George B. Cole and Vance Phillips took their oaths of office for new four-year terms.

Meantime, three of the County’s four row offices changed hands on Tuesday. Jeffrey S. Christopher, Scott M. Dailey and Cynthia Green were sworn in as the County’s new Sheriff, Recorder of Deeds, and Register of Wills, respectively, as a crowd of family and friends looked on from inside Council chambers.

As Council President, Mr. Vincent will preside over all council meetings in 2011, with Mr. Wilson substituting as the presiding officer anytime Mr. Vincent is unable to attend. “I’d like to thank Council for the opportunity to serve as president this year,” Mr. Vincent said upon taking the gavel.

It is customary for the council, at the first meeting of each new year, to elect its officers and appoint legal staff. All of the officers elected and appointments made Tuesday were decided unanimously.

Council approved J. Everett Moore to re-appointment as County Attorney. Mr. Moore will serve the County Council as the elected body’s chief counsel.

Meantime, Vincent G. Robertson and Richard E. Berl Jr. also were re-appointed as assistant county attorneys, with Mr. Robertson to serve the Planning & Zoning Commission and Mr. Berl to serve the Board of Adjustment.
