Graduating Paramedic Students Recognized

April 30, 2010 MR 10-04 [Georgetown, Del.]-Sussex County Paramedics Denise Helfer, Rob Luksic, and Amy Robb were recently recognized for their completion of the Delaware Technical and Community College and the Sussex County orientation process. In a presentation before the Sussex County Council attended by colleagues and family members, the graduates received their Paramedic badges. Director Robert Stuart recognized the achievements of the graduates and congratulated them on a job well done.

Director Stuart also provided the Council with information about the background for the student program. Sussex County EMS began sponsoring students in the Delaware Technical and Community College Program in 2004. Since that time, 17 students who have passed the program are still employed as paramedics today. Director Stuart further explained this program allows local residents the opportunity to obtain paramedic certification. The 18 month training program includes college level didactic classes as well as hands-on clinical and field evaluation components.

According to Director Stuart, “Although we have been successful in recruiting paramedics from other areas, there is a recognized shortage of qualified paramedics locally and nationally. The student sponsorship program has helped Sussex County EMS considerably with filling vacancies due to the growth of our system and attrition.”
