1600 Hours, Friday, Jan. 29, 2010: The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Sussex County, from 7 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, until midnight, as a coastal winter storm is expected to bring another round of snowfall to the region this weekend.
Forecasters are predicting as much as 2 to 4 inches of snow to fall, mostly during the daytime and early evening hours Saturday. However, as is typical with coastal winter storms, there is uncertainty about the exact track of the storm.
“Although the forecast predicts a minimal snowfall, we urge everyone to keep track of the weather because a slight shift in the storm’s path could cause a significant change in accumulations throughout the county,” said Joseph L. Thomas, director of the County’s Emergency Operations Center. Current forecasts call for the heaviest snow to fall just to the south of Delaware, in southeastern Virginia.
Residents should use caution if traveling this weekend. Delaware Department of Transportation crews have pre-treated area roadways in anticipation of the storm, and crews will focus snow removal efforts on primary arteries before moving to secondary routes and back roads.
Some minor tidal flooding is possible with this coastal winter storm, as well as cold, blustery conditions. Motorists should always avoid flooded roadways, as well as watch for blowing and drifting snow.
The Sussex County Emergency Operations Center will continue to monitor this weekend’s winter weather, and will post further updates should they become necessary. For updates, stay tuned to local television and radio stations, and the Sussex County EOC Web site, at sussexcountyde.gov/services/storm.
