New 'Text-to-911' feature now available statewide

Sussex County is proud to partner with the State of Delaware and the nation’s top telecommunications carriers in making ‘Text-to-911’ available to mobile phone users. Announced in March 2018, the new feature allows wireless callers anywhere within Sussex County and the rest of Delaware to send texts to 9-1-1 dispatchers in the event of an emergency. With just a few taps, callers who are cannot talk – whether because of an impairment, or because of the situation – can summon police, fire or medical services with a simple text.

Dialing 9-1-1 is still the best way to call for help. Citizens should only text if calling 9-1-1 is not possible. Simply text ‘9-1-1’ in the ‘To’ field on your mobile phone and then type a short message.
