On August 13, 2024, EMS Logistics Technician Thomas Berry III was first on scene of a motor vehicle accident where he tragically lost his life in the line of duty while assisting someone in need.
Thomas was dedicated to his family and community, proud of his role in the EMS department, and motivated to further his career in emergency services. In addition to his career with Sussex County EMS, Thomas was a volunteer member of the Georgetown and Ellendale Volunteer Fire Departments.
Paramedic Stephanie Callaway, a five-year veteran with Sussex County EMS, died as the result of an ambulance collision on June 17, 2008. Paramedic Callaway will always be remembered by her co-workers for her wonderful smile, passion for education, and commitment to community service.
Paramedic Callaway was one of the department's Field Training Officers, served as a Public Information Officer, and was President of the Sussex County Paramedic Association. She held a Bachelor's Degree in Emergency Services Management from The George Washington University in Washington D.C.
Paramedic Callaway started her career in EMS at the Georgetown American Legion Ambulance Squad in Georgetown, Delaware, and had worked as a State Police Dispatcher, and later as a paramedic with Kent County EMS prior to joining Sussex County EMS in 2003. She was also a member of the Lewes Fire Department. Stephanie is survived by her husband and two children.
